If you’ve read my previous post on getting the most out of your hair extensions you’ll know that it’s best to avoid chlorinated swimming pools and the beach. But let’s face it, most of us will end up spending at least some of our summer breaking this rule. If you have clip on extensions, you can easily remove them before swimming. But a lot of women don’t have this luxury and need to take a few precautions to ensure they don’t end up with matted or damaged hair extensions.
Avoid Hair Extension Damage When Swimming
- Use a swimming cap: It may seem like a real pain having to wear a cap, but it will ensure your hair keeps in place and doesn’t get swamped with water.
- Use plastic wrap: Wrap your head in the plastic wrap used for your lunch. I know, it may sound a bit extreme! But if you wrap your head before putting on a cap, you’ll keep out all water and no damage will result to your hair
- Braid Your Hair: If you don’t want to wear the above, then ensure you braid/plat your hair so that it reduces the tangling.
- Rinse Hair Before Swimming: Rinse your hair in fresh water before entering the pool or sea. This reduces the absorption of salt/chlorine water.
- Hair Care After Swimming: Shampoo and condition your hair immediately after swimming if that’s possible. If not, make sure you have a bottle of spray-in conditioner on hand to apply after swimming.
Swimming in chlorinated pools and at the beach isn’t great for your hair extensions. But if you have to do it, use the above tips and you’ll really help extend the life of your extensions.
