I have recently stumbled onto a website that is selling hair extensions for babies. I had to really look over this website closely as I thought it had to be a joke. According to the supplier, their product “allows baby girls with little or no hair to have realistic hair in a snap”. Basically the product is a headband with bangs attached.
You may ask why, why, WHY would anyone want this!? The sales pitch on the website basically says that “the product has been developed to save the mother the “humiliation” of someone thinking their baby girl is a boy.
I’m not going to go into a rant as to why this product is wrong on so many levels. I’ll just make a few very quick points:
- If you’re that worried about your girl looking like a boy, dress them in pink like I do with my daughter.
- A lot of babies aren’t big fans of things on their heads. What if the baby rips off the headband in public? Surely that would be more humiliating for the parents?
- From an ethics point of view, why are we obsessing about babies looks so early on? All babies look cute. So your baby girl has no hair, get over it.
I was suprised to see this product is sold by a Beverley Hills based company
If anyone can sell me on this feel free to leave a comment but you’ll have your work cut out for you.
