A very common question that I get asked is will micro ring hair extensions damage my natural hair. I think this is a fair question; the last thing a woman wants after removing the extensions is to have her own hair looking a mess. In the majority of cases, you will not have hair damage from micro ring extensions. But this is not always the case and so here is a list of factors that increase your chances of hair damage.
With some of the factors below you will find that they apply to all application methods. For example, point 1, if you have weak hair then most methods are not suitable for extensions, not just micro rings.
Causes of micro ring hair extension damage
- Weak or damaged hair: Is your hair the type that breaks or pulls out at the roots when you give it a light tug? If so, maybe clip ons might be a better option.
- Hair extension quality: This is really important. If you have poor quality non-remy hair and it tangles within a few days, you can keep trying to maintain it. But all the extra brushing and de-tangling and the eventual birds nest which WILL result, causes unnecessary pressure on your natural hair and can result in traction alopecia.
- Quality of Salon or Hair Extension Technician: If you are getting a professional to add your extensions, how good are they? Do they have lots of before and after pics and do they have customer references? There are new salons starting up offering this service all the time who severely lack experience. Make sure you don’t get one of these. There are various ways they can increase your chance of hair breakage such as adding the micro rings too close to the scalp, squeezing the rings way too hard, or carelessly removing the extensions further down the track.
- Trichatillimania: If you have this unfortunate disorder, you will have a tendency to pull at your natural hair. Excessive picking and pulling at your hair or the extensions is not a good thing.
- Hair Extension Pliers: They need to be good quality pliers that are designed for adding and removing hair extensions. For more on this check out this previous post on micro ring hair extension pliers.
Not every woman wants micro rings extensions and so I will provide information on whether other extension methods will damage your hair in future posts.

I have been a hair extension specialist for over 10 years.
It litteraly has most to do with the skill of the person
doin the service. A person who has done it for Years
will just know what hair types will work with what
method. I find that not one method is perfect. Everyone
has a difrent har type so you need to select
the method best for you. A good consult is key!
