What Hair Extension Weight Is Best For You?

“My hairdresser told me to find an extension supplier and buy 200 extensions”. I hear this quite often but it is a bit puzzling. How can a hairdresser know how many extensions someone needs without knowing who the hair extension supplier is and more importantly, what weight extensions they supply. Hair extensions come in a whole range of weights, the more common weights being 0.5g, 0.8g and 1g per extension. So if you’re buying 1g extensions, you wouldn’t need as many extensions as if the hair was 0.5g. Keep that in mind.

From my experience, I have found that heavier extensions such as 1g extensions only look good if:

  1. The client has VERY thick hair.
  2. Very long hair extensions are being added, such as 24″ or longer. If you have long extensions and they’re 0.5g, they tend to look a bit straggly and thin.

In most other circumstances, I find 0.5 extensions look more natural in your hair than the thicker extensions. Adding extra extensions and using a lighter weight gives a more natural look. The larger weight extensions tend to look a bit chunky and you can tell they aren’t real.

I am always interested in other points of view on hair extension weight, feel free to comment :)
