Micro Ring Hair Extensions – A Complete Guide

Micro ring hair extensions (also called easy ring extensions) have become hugely popular over the last few years. Attaching this type of extension is simple yet very effective. The human hair is pulled through a micro ring and then squeezed shut using hair extension pliers. Why would you want to use this method of application? Well, here are a few reasons:

Best Reasons For Adding Micro Ring Extensions

  • A relatively safe method. Not quite as safe as clip ons but still a good option as they don’t involve heat or glue which have the potential to damage your hair.
  • Easy application. After trialling a few practice micro ring extensions, most women find they can add the extensions themselves or get some help from a friend to add them.
  • Quick application and removal. Unlike some other methods which take half a day, micro rings can be added in under 2 hours. Removing them is even quicker, only about 20 minutes (varies a bit depending on how many extensions you have).

A few other things to consider: If you have weak hair that breaks easily it isn’t recommended you use micro ring hair extensions. Actually, I wouldn’t recommend using any hair extension methods except clip ons if your hair breaks easily.

Micro ring extensions should not cause serious damage to your hair if you maintain them properly. It is important you are careful brushing and that you hold the hair when brushing if there is a tangle. Funnily enough, a common question is will the micro rings (which are often made of metal) cause problems with x-ray machines such as those used when going through security points at airports. I use this method in my hair on and off and have never had issues at airports with the beeper going off. I’ve also had dental xrays and they didn’t effect the machine. I’d expect it could cause issues if you were having a scan of the top of your head?

A step-by-step guide:

You will firstly need to buy your hair extensions. It is easier to add micro ring extensions which have the hair already attached to the ring. This extension type has a handy discardable plastic loop attached which means you can easily thread your hair through the ring without the need for a threader. You can then remove the plastic loop. If you have these extensions, use the following steps:

  1. Gather a strand of natural hair.
  2. With your other hand, take a micro ring extension and place the loop over your thumb and forefinger.
  3. Pull the natural hair through the plastic loop using your thumb and index finger.
  4. Hold the micro ring with one hand and the plastic guiding loop with the other.
  5. Pull the plastic guiding loop so that the natural hair begins threading through the micro ring.
  6. Pull the natural hair completely through the ring and discard the plastic loop.
  7. Use pliers to squeeze the ring shut. Squeeze firmly but it isn’t necessary to really crush the ring closed. That can damage the ring and also your hair.
  8. Repeat the previous steps by adding extensions in rows. How closely you place the extensions apart and how many rows you add will depend a bit on the person’s head, hair type and the number of extensions you are adding.

Removing Micro Ring Extensions:

This is one of the real advantages of micro rings. All you need to do is squeeze the ring with your extension pliers and it will reopen. You can then slide the hair extension off.

Adjusting Micro Ring Extensions:

As your natural hair grows out, your extensions will move down and become visible. To adjust the hair extensions back up towards the roots simply squeeze open the rings using the pliers. Then carefully slide up the extensions and squeeze shut again.

You will find the micro rings very light and small. Because the rings are lightweight, you need to be careful with them when opening and closing. With most brands, you’ll usually only be able to open and shut a few times before they start to become damaged.
