Hair Care Products For Hair Extensions

Choosing the right hair care product is an important decision as poor quality products will do your hair no favours. Once you add hair extensions, the importance of choosing the right hair care products increases dramatically.

Why do you need good quality hair care products?

1. Allows for easier management of your hair (less tangling!).

2. Prolongs the life of your hair extensions significantly.

Choosing A Quality Hair Extension Shampoo and Conditioner

So what hair care products are better for your extensions. Perhaps I should start with what ingredients in hair care products to avoid. Avoid these ingredients even if you don’t have hair extensions:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – strips you of natural oils and can cause skin and eye irritation.
  • Selenium Sulfide (in dandruff shampoos) – can cause discoloration of the hair and alter the color of hair dyes.
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate – can cause severe irritation to eyes and skin.
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate – can cause severe irritation to eyes and skin.

Unfortunately, most of the shampoos and conditioners at the supermarket will have these ingredients in them. Even products like Pantene which are considered premium brand in supermarkets won’t do your natural hair or extensions any favours.

You need to consider visiting a retailer that specialises in hair products or visit your hair salon to get their advice. Try to get a good quality brand. I have found KMS California or Paul Mitchell to be well suited to hair extensions. As your extensions start to age, MoistRepair by KMS is great for giving your hair a new lease of life.

It is also a good idea to ocassionally use a hair treatment. Don’t use too many though because with some extension methods, it can effect the bonds and you can get shedding. SilkSheen by KMS is quite a good option.

Conclusion:

  1. Try to avoid those nasty ingredients mentioned above. It’s not easy because they’re in a lot of hair care products.
  2. Go for a good quality brand you can get from a specialty store or hair salon. My experience with brands sold in supermarkets isn’t good. At best, your hair extensions won’t last as long as they’re intended to last. At worst, using a poor cheap shampoo or conditioner can effect where the extension is bonded to the natural hair.
