Hair Care – A guide to getting the most out of your extensions.

Having extensions added is really exciting as they can transform your whole image and give you real confidence. But if you don’t look after your new hair, the quality will deteriorate quicker than it should and you also risk matting the extensions. Below we’ve compiled some handy tips for keeping your extensions looking their best:

Hair Extension Care Tips

Washing
Gradually wet your hair and brush gently before you wash it. Massage the scalp gently all over using a downward flow. Do not rub the hair together as this will cause tangling and make combing out and styling very difficult. When you have finished washing, flood your hair with warm water. Squeeze the excess water from the hair. Pat dry, do not rub.

Styling
When brushing use a soft bristle brush or a paddle brush with wide teeth (and a wide tooth comb for wavy/curly hair). Start at the ends of your hair and gently work your way up to the roots. Brush your hair 2 or 3 times a day if possible. Be careful with the use of blow-dryers and curling irons. It is best to let your hair dry naturally whenever possible.

Exercise
Wear a cap when swimming if possible. It is not recommended you expose your hair to chlorine. If in salt water, make sure to condition after swimming.

Blow Drying
Before blow-drying your extensions, it is a good idea to prepare and style the top section and fringe area. Then, using a cool setting on your dryer, tip your head forward and dry the root area. Using a hotter setting, blow-dry the hair section by section. Wrap hair around a bristle brush, or in the paddle brush, and hold the dryer over it (not on it) until the hair is dry.

Sleeping
Never sleep on wet hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry before you go to bed. It is also recommended to wrap your hair together or gently tie it up to prevent tangling. Spray a little conditioner in before tying up.

Hair care products
Use a premium quality (leave-in) conditioner to keep your hair soft but don’t over do it. Too much conditioner can cause a build up and tangling. Ask your stylist for advice on hair care products. Avoid getting any product or conditioner on, or around the rings, as this will contribute to slipping.

Hair treatments
Avoid permanent colour if possible on your extensions. As with any hair, dye will reduce its life. Use a semi-permanent colour if you intend to colour your extensions, free of ammonia or peroxide bleach. Bleaching is not recommended.

Avoid excessive pulling or picking of extensions as this may result in your natural hair breaking.

    • Hi Denniss
Apologies, my Spanish isn’t the best so I’ll respond in Englsh. Can you send me a picture of your extensions using our “contact us” page? Wefts can be manufactured in different ways so it really helps if I can see a picture first which shows a close up of the seam at the top.

  2. HI I HAVE RECENTLY DONE MY FRIENDS HAIR WITH THE MICRO RINGS AN ABOUT 50 OF HER EXTENSIONS HAVE COME OUT. PLEASE COULD YOU HELP. THANKS LEANNE

    • Hi Leanne, sorry about the big delay in responding. It’s probably a bit late for your friend but I’ll respond anyway. There are 3 main reasons for slipping:

      1. Hair type: Micro rings aren’t ideal if you have high oil content in your hair. I’d have to say this is quite rare to have such high oil content that it causes slippage. I’ve had a few clients like this and the only thing I can suggest is using a second micro ring. This usually stops the problem but it increases the chance of the rings being visible. Also, it isn’t as comfortable because you have double the micro rings in your hair.

      2. Hair Care Products: Using conditioners right up close to the roots can cause slippage. Also, poor quality shampoo and conditioner is really bad for extensions. Click on the following link to learn more about hair care products for hair extensions.

      3. Application Method: The hair extensions you’ve purchased may not have been added correctly. Did you pull enough hair through each ring? Not pulling enough hair through can cause slippping.

I hope this helps you and anyone else having this problem.
