A Guide To Hair Extension Textures

Not all hair textures are the same. Getting the texture of the hair extension to match your hair isn’t always easy. It’s often a good idea to get a sample first if you’re buying online to ensure it matches your hair. This post will show you the more popular types of textures on the market.

Hair Extension Textures

  • straight hair: this is by far the most common hair type and as the name suggests, this hair is straight. If your hair has a slight wave but you often straighten it, you’re probably best to go for straight hair extensions and then use a straightener to wave it if necessary. I have found that about 90% of all clients I’ve ever dealt with look great with straight hair extensions.
  • body wave: also known as loose wave or romance wave. This is a gentle flowing wave.
  • deep wave: this wave is a tighter wave, closer to a spiral curl.
  • curly: a tight curl (think Shirley Temple?).
  • wet n wavy: soft loose wave which reverts to a curl when it’s wet.
  • yaki: straight hair that has a slightly bumpy texture, similar to African hair.

Another quick point: Hair extensions with a curl or wave are generally manufactured that way. The hair usually isn’t naturally wavy. Therefore, you’ll often find that the curl or wave eventually reverts back to straight. So be prepared, you may need to pull out the hair straightener to get back that wave.
