Clip on hair extensions are a wonderful method because they’re just so easy to add. If you can use a hairclip in your hair, then you can add clip ons. Clip ons are not a permanent method so you can attach them in the morning in a few minutes and then remove them at night before going to bed. You can also remove them when swimming and doing vigorous sports which is a bonus as the life of the extensions will be longer than other permanent methods as a result.
Another Benefit of Clip On Extensions
Clip ons are relatively safe! You are much less likely to have damage to your hair which has been known to happen with some other methods such as weave and fusion. I usually recommend this extension method to women that want extensions but have very weak hair or damaged hair.
With this method, the hair extensions come in different sized pieces (or wefts). Some women just buy a single weft to add a bit of body to their hair. There are also complete packs which can contain up to 8 or 10 different sized width wefts. This gives you the ability to create a really natural look. For example, the smaller 2″ wide pieces can be used on the side to frame the face. The big wefts are used at the back near the nape to create a lot of body and length.
There are lots of brands of clip ons on the market. I strongly urge you to buy human hair and not synthetic hair. If you try to colour synthetic hair, the colour simply won’t hold. If you try to style synthetic hair, it will frizzle and melt. You get what you pay for with hair extensions so don’t buy cheap and get synthetic.
If you decide to buy human hair, it is best to style and, if necessary, colour your extensions before adding them to your head.
Steps To Add Clip Ons:
It’s hard to give exact instructions on adding clip ons because packs come in different sizes and quantities of wefts. But the following gives you a rough idea on how it works:
- Style and colour clip ons before adding.
- Create a horizontal part with a comb about one inch above the nape of the neck. Secure the loose hair with clips. Begin placing the wefts along the hairline and secure the clips. I start with the bigger wefts lower on the head but you can trial different positions.
- Create a horizontal part an inch above the first row of wefts and add the smaller wefts.
- Repeat the above step moving up another inch and continue until all the wefts are used or until you run out of room on your head.
- If you have them, add the really small wefts to the side of your head for framing.

I got clip ons for my wedding last month and they looked awesome (even if I do say so myself!). Most people couldn’t even tell I had them in. I think it’s funny when people see you the the day before with short hair. Next day your extensions are added and they honestly don’t notice any difference… except that your hair looks great!!
I am a triathlete so having permanent extensions added would be a nightmare as they’d matt too quickly from all the salt water. Clip ons were the ideal solution as a week after my honeymoon I had the extensions out and was back into the water.
